Toilets and Cisterns

The most used and overworked piece of plumbing in the whole house aside from the kitchen sink is the toilet and a malfunctioning toilet can be a source of much inconvenience.

Here at F&M we provide reliable fast plumbing services across the Sunshine Coast to ensure that your toilet problems are addressed as soon as possible.

About 40% of all water consumed in the home is used in the bathroom. A quarter of that water is flushed down the toilet!

There are a few problems can occur in a toilet cistern. The most common being a faulty float valve or a poorly adjusted float arm.

This problem is clearly visible from the outside, water drips or runs from the overflow pipe causing your cistern to constantly fill which is noisy and wasteful. A leaking toilet can waste up to 16,000 litres per year.

To assess whether your toilet is leaking follow these steps:

  1. Listen for a hissing sound – if you listen closely to the cistern and can hear hissing, this usually means water is escaping.
  2. Flush the toilet and wait for the cistern to completely fill. Then remove the cistern lid and place about 5 or 6 drops of food colouring in the cistern water. A dark colour such as green or blue is better than a light colour such as yellow.
  3. Replace the lid and wait for up to 30 minutes, then check the water in the toilet bowl. If it has changed colour, there is a leak present.

Leaking toilets, blocked toilets and toilet cistern replacements or repairs can be easily fixed by our team of Sunshine Coast plumbers at F&M Plumbers and Drainers.
